Mr. Matthew Martin B.Ed. (Music, History) UVic 2009
Mr. Martin started in SD61 in November 2011, taking on strings at Sundance Elementary, Marigold Elementary, and the full music program at Rockheights Middle School. Since then, Mr. Martin has taught music programs at Vic West Elementary, Margaret Jenkins Elementary, Quadra Elementary, Cedar Hill Middle School, and finally landing at Strawberry Vale Elementary in 2016. Completing a Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria in 2009, Mr. Martin continued working for C.I.B.C. as an Assistant Branch Manager before fully stepping into his teaching career. Mr. Martin is a professional trumpet player playing in multiple groups in Victoria including the Commodores Big Band (lead trumpet), and the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. Mr. Martin is active in his church worship bands playing primarily the drum-set but also ukulele, piano, bass, and vocals when needed. Mr. Martin is also an avid ukulele player and has been an instructor of SD61's Island Ukuleles since the fall of 2007. Mr. Martin is an active advocate for music education in BC serving as the Treasurer of the British Columbia Music Educators' Association and as the Marketplace and Industry Chairperson of the BCMEA Annual Conference. Mr. Martin has recently been elected to the board of the Canadian Music Educators' Association in the role of Public Relations.
