The last couple of weeks at music we have been exploring how music can be accessible to anyone. Using the example of classical composer Beethoven, who despite losing his hearing to an illness continued to write and create beautiful music for us to enjoy. The music of Beethoven is world renowned and is a wonderful example for our students here. See the video below of "Ode an die Freude" (Ode to Joy) from Beethoven's 9th and final symphony. This was written at a time when Beethoven could no longer hear but proves to be a masterpiece just as his other works are. Drawing a parallel to today, composer and singer Mandy Harvey wowed judges on America's Got Talent with her original composition created after she lost her hearing to a connective tissue disorder. Her inspiring story is similar to that of Beethoven and shows how music is "not about the sound, but about the feeling". Our lesson to take away is that music is for everyone, no matter the challenges they might face. Enjoy the music in the videos below.
